My apologies in advance for all the deaths-by-jealousy that this will cause.

This is a cover recreation I commissioned from the superbly talented and all-around great guy Evan “Doc” Shaner, a fella of whom I once said - and I continue to firmly insist upon - captures in his style everything I’d ever want to see in a mainstream comic book. Look at this guy’s linework! Somewhere between Toth and Kubert, just drink in “Doc” Shaner.

Anyway. this is a recreation of the cover to Superman #276, a story which pitted the Man of Steel against a fairly familiar one-time-only look-alike to Fawcett Comics’ Captain Marvel - Captain Thunder. It’s always been one of my favorite stories, and one of the few comics I’ve chosen to keep after getting rid of my collection lo these many years ago (It is, for instance, the origin of Clark Kent’s “Beef Bourgignon with Ketchup” thing).

I’ve been wanting to get recreations of my favorite Superman covers, and Doc was the obvious choice for this one. Not only is he mad for Captain Marvel, check out the level of detail he put into this thing. He hand-lettered a Comics Code Approval stamp, folks! It’s ridiculous, and totally worth the money. This has a place of honor in my studio.

I want this!!

Oh my goodness, these vintage ads are jawdropping. (One ad actually says, “Men are better than women!”) Can you believe these are from just a few decades ago? Our grandparents might have considered them normal!
